Design studio Hiroki Tominaga Atelier convert a 50 square meters space into a meeting room on the ground floor of a three story building. As the building is rented by a video production company and the lease was uncertain, an economical solution was required to transform this space. A total of 130 wooden shipping pallets were used to create floor, wall coverings and furniture in a temporary office space in Tokyo.
The idea of using wooden pallets came to the designers after noticing the crates being used to deliver water to a number of small publishing factories that occupy nearby buildings. The renovation project is called Shitomito Pallet after this material.
Designers used three types of pallets with a cost from £20 to £6.50 per piece. The cheapest pallets were used to construct a tiered ceiling, while mid-priced pallets were used for the walls and tables.
